Aug. 16, Orleans

The long-anticipated season for local tomatoes is finally here. At the Orleans market, many stalls are overflowing with shiny red, orange, yellow, and green fruits. Yes, fruits. Botanically speaking, this classification is not debatable. Cherry tomatoes abound, including the sweetest of the crop: Sungold and Sunsugar, two orange varieties that are hugely productive and barely acidic. For large tomatoes, there are Brandywine, Pineapple, Cherokee Green, Green Zebra, Kellogg’s Breakfast (guess the color of this one), and many that this marketgoer probably missed or misidentified. Really, a guidebook would be useful. Find your favorites at these stalls: Brewster’s Allard Farm, the Mayo Garden and Lake Farm Garden from Orleans, Osterville’s Seapuit Farms, and Falmouth’s Peachtree Circle Farm. Now the question is: how many tomato sandwiches, salads, sauces, and pies can you eat in the next couple of weeks?
