Think It Can’t Happen Here? Be Warned
Oct 13, 2020 | 8:00 pm
Sinclair Lewis’s 1935 novel It Can’t Happen Here, written after Mussolini and Hitler rose to power in Europe, posited that a fascist takeover of the U.S. was far from impossible. Lewis liked to satirize the middle class of heartland America, but what would he have made of Trump? The theater company Berkeley Rep adapted the novel into a stage play in 2016, and now, in conjunction with companies across the nation, including Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, it’s presenting a radio version of that production, starring David Strathairn and much of the original cast, live-streamed for free via YouTube on Tuesday, October 13th, at 8 p.m. A discussion with the creative team follows the performance.
