‘Sister Cities’ Across the Water
Jul 22, 2021 | 8:00 am
The Provincetown Art Gallery Association, formerly Ptown Gallery Stroll, has launched a virtual exhibit in collaboration with the annual Harwich Festival of the Arts happening concurrently in the U.K. Colonial history links the two “sister-city” seaport towns: Harwich is where the Mayflower was built. About 20 galleries contributed a few pieces each, resulting in a cross section of work that reflects the natural beauty, cultural history, and quirky character of Provincetown.
Curated by the Provincetown Commons, the virtual exhibit offers concise notes alongside the work, providing a gentle narrative. Mike Carroll, one of the organizers of the exhibit, says that one of its goals is to “have the people that you meet when you walk into these spaces be the generator of the story, whether it’s an artist in their studio, an artist at their opening, or a gallerist in conversation with someone who’s asking a question about Provincetown, its history, or a piece of work on the wall.”
The exhibit offers a space to connect with Provincetown’s art scene — a welcome and refreshing sight no matter where you are or what phase of the pandemic we’re in. “Let’s show what people are making, and see what it looks like together, and that can be a thumbprint for the moment,” says Carroll.
