‘SALLY’ in Wellfleet
Aug 10, 2021 | 6:00 pm
The interdisciplinary SALLY Project focuses on “using art to activate the public memory of women, like Sally Hemings, whose lives have been erased or marginalized.” Hemings, an enslaved woman, was the mistress of Thomas Jefferson, who fathered her children born into slavery.
Founded and curated by Sasha Chavchavadze and JoAnne McFarland, SALLY began in 2019 at three different sites in New York. The SALLY Project in Wellfleet features 24 artists in four different venues. The Wellfleet Historical Society and Museum is currently hosting an exhibit, continuing through October, on Delilah Gibbs, known as “the last Indian in Wellfleet.” There is also a virtual exhibition at the Wellfleet Public Library. There will be new exhibitions at Farm Projects and WHEN Studio in August. There will also be a curators’ talk at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum on Tuesday, August 10th at 6 p.m. Visit sallyproject.net for more information.
