Joe Diggs Zooms ‘Home’
Mar 4, 2021 | 3:00 pm
Joseph Diggs, the spring artist-in-residence at Cape Cod Community College, will speak in a Zoom event on Thursday, March 4th, at 3 p.m. about an exhibit of his work, “Home,” at the Higgins Art Gallery of the Tilden Arts Center. “The process of painting has helped me emotionally by providing a physical escape,” writes Diggs in the press release. “Blending figuration and abstraction with a basis or departure from landscape gives me the space to make emotionally hypnotic gestural works.”
Diggs lives and works on his family compound of houses and bungalows on Micah’s Pond in Osterville. Nearby is the abandoned Joe’s Twin Villa, a jazz club owned and run by Diggs’s family, which largely figures in the exhibit. Diggs’s compound is a Cape Cod vacation destination that until the ’70s was listed in the Green Book, a Jim Crow−era guide to restaurants, motels, and stores that were safe for Blacks. African-American historian Audrey Thomas will be a special guest speaker at the event.
