Duncan Johnson’s Theory

“Theory of Everything” is assemblage artist Duncan Johnson’s new show at Kobalt Gallery, running Friday, Aug. 13 through Thursday, Aug. 19. Johnson’s work exists in a middle ground between found and familiar. Physical manifestations of material culture — scavenged floorboards and old window trim— are reinvigorated with keen design. They are as much about painting as they are about sculpture. Drawing from a stockpile of old floorboards and window frames, Johnson incorporates raw “new” wood, wire nails, and fresh paint to expand his formal vocabulary while retaining an attachment to the past. His pieces are poetic responses to complex formal questions. The gallery, located at 366 Commercial St. in Provincetown, is open daily, noon to 6 p.m.; Friday until 9 p.m.; Wednesday by appointment.
