EASTHAM — The spring season gets underway in earnest this week as every team except unified track plays at least once. This is the second of a two-part series previewing Nauset High School’s spring sports.
Girls Golf
Coach Brian Hicks’s team posted a .500 record in 2024, a four-win improvement over 2023. Hicks is hoping his team makes another run to the state tournament. The number-one player graduated, but last year’s number two, Sophie Silvestri, is “much improved,” says Hicks, a result of hard work in the off-season.
Key returners: Sophie Silvestri, Lucy Keigans, Leah Brown, Addie Parrott, Lilah Baer, Emma Levya.
Newcomers to watch: Finley Williams, Lilliana Baroni.
Fun fact: Coach Hicks, in his third year, has also coached the Nauset boys team for 20 years, recording his 200th victory with that team last fall.
Upcoming schedule: The season starts this Thursday at Falmouth. They play their first home match against Barnstable on Tuesday, April 8.
Boys Tennis
Coach Andy Lisle leads a team that showed great improvement last season when they posted an 11-5 record and qualified for the state tournament. This year, “I am hopeful because we are so deep,” says Lisle. There are six seniors on the squad of 15. That leads to a good problem for any coach to have: all seven starting slots are wide open heading into the first match.
Key returners: Lucas Wilson-Bevington, Jason White, Joey Smith, Will Murphy, Will Christopher, Lucas Patton, Soren Jones-Carlson, Asher Woods, Owen O’Reilly, Wyatt Carrol, Het Patel, Bennett McKenna.
Newcomers to watch: Andrew Tobin, Ronan O’Brien, Tristan Mariak.
Fun fact: This is the largest senior class that Coach Lisle, entering his sixth season, has ever had.
Upcoming schedule: The season starts Wednesday at St. John Paul II. The home opener is Monday, April 7 against Cape Cod Academy.
Girls Tennis
Last year’s team had an extremely competitive season against a tough non-league schedule, finishing 7-9 and qualifying for the playoffs. She lost her number-one player, but Head Coach Kathleen Tringale expects to field a strong team. “All members of the team have been on the courts working on their game, and it is evident they have improved,” says Tringale.
Key returners: Faye Adams, Anjali O’Brien, Sophia Votteler, Elexa Malouin, Chloe Hand, Callie Murphy.
Fun fact: Nancy O’Connell has been the team’s assistant coach for 12 years, creating a formidable duo with Coach Tringale, who has been the head coach for 15 years.
Upcoming schedule: The girls open their season at home on Wednesday against St. John Paul II.
Co-ed Track and Field
Moira Nobili enters her 15th season as head coach of both the boys and girls teams. A large number of seniors graduated, but Nobili is optimistic because “the kids are stepping up and filling [the empty] slots.” Eight returners qualified for the state Division 4 meet last year, and they will provide experience to go along with their large numbers — this year’s squad totals approximately 70 athletes.
Key returners (girls): Violet Roche, Rhianna Sutherland, Maddie Mahoney, Amina Illusinova, Annika Valli, Adrianna Morgan.
Key returners (boys): Reed Dill, Isaiah Robinson, Ethan Koufos, Peter Silvernail, Adian Brown.
Newcomers to watch (girls): Maeve Roche, Lana Dill.
Newcomers to watch (boys): Parker Swain, Max Kerry, James Silvernail.
Fun fact: The team, which sports the state’s easternmost high school track, takes advantage of its proximity to the Atlantic to run striders on the beach and in the ocean.
Upcoming schedule: The Warriors opened on the road Tuesday against Barnstable. Their first home meet will be on Tuesday, April 8 versus Dennis-Yarmouth.
Unified Track and Field
Last year was a success because “each individual showed improvement,” says Head Coach Jake Pickard, adding that all his athletes demonstrated “real growth and progression.” The coach is looking for more of the same this year, although he has only one returner in senior Brennan Armstrong. Armstrong will be a fixture in the shot and the 100 meters. Gabriel Hammond has impressed in early practice sessions with the javelin and, according to his coach, “is going to be a delight to watch this season.” Nine other newcomers, including two sets of siblings, will vie to participate in the aforementioned events as well as the long jump, 200 and 400 meters, and the 4×100-meter relay. The team will work on improving its technique while simultaneously building life skills including social inclusion and patience.
Key returner: Brennan Armstrong.
Newcomers to watch: Jakob Baerga, Addyson Greemore, Corbany Greemore, Gabriel Hammond, Ava Herold, Eloise MacMillan, Morgan McWilliams, Calla Pearson, Bridgette Tesson, Jessica Tesson.
Fun fact: The team motto is “We are comfortable being uncomfortable.”
Upcoming schedule: The team’s first meet is Thursday, April 10 at home against Falmouth.
