EASTHAM — The fifth-ranked Nauset boys lacrosse team fell 19-5 to top-seeded Medfield in the MIAA Division 3 Final Four match on Tuesday.
Senior Colby Smith led the way with two goals in the Warriors’ loss. He posted a total of 19 goals in the postseason.
Nauset held a 2-1 lead 2:18 into the game before Medfield sprinted to a 9-2 lead.
The lacrosse boys had secured the first-ever Final Four spot in the program’s history with an overtime win over no. 4 Newburyport last Saturday, when junior Logan Poulin, who tallied a hat trick, scored the game-winning goal six seconds into the extra period.
Poulin won the faceoff and raced downfield unimpeded toward the Newburyport goal before unleashing a shot from 15 yards out that was no match for the goalie.
Nauset had let a five-goal halftime lead slip away, with Newburyport scoring seven unanswered goals to take an 8-7 advantage with three minutes left in regulation.
The Warriors recovered and scored two quick goals to take the lead with 1:52 left. But the Clippers tied the game 15 seconds later, which set up Poulin for his overtime heroics.
Smith continued to have a nose for the goal with a hat trick against Newburyport, bringing his post-season tally to 17 goals in three games. Junior Joey Berardi notched two goals.
No. 16 Nauset baseball saw their season come to an end in the Round of 16 at No. 1 Oakmont Regional in a 3-0 defeat on June 5. The Spartans, who are the Division 3 defending champions, scored all three runs in the second inning.
The baseball team finished with a 15-7 record overall under first-year head coach Brett Labonte.
The 11th-ranked Warriors girls lacrosse team lost in the Round of 16 at No. 6 Ashland on June 4. They finished with an 11-9 record.
