EASTHAM — Nauset senior Jordyn Streitmatter represented the Warriors in the Cape and Islands High School All-Star basketball game last Sunday at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center.
Streitmatter posted a team-high 17 points, knocking down 5 3-pointers on her way to being named Most Valuable Player for the Lower Cape all-star team. The team, however, was edged by the Upper Cape, 74-71, in the 34th edition of the event.
“To be selected to represent Nauset meant my hard work has paid off, and it showed that what I’ve been doing in games is being recognized,” she said.
Streitmatter recently made a commitment to play basketball at NCAA Division III Mitchell College in New London, Conn. The shooting guard averaged a team-leading 16.5 points per game and had 30 3-pointers in 20 games as a senior.
Mitchell College women’s basketball is coming off a 6-16 record overall and a 4-10 mark in conference play under first-year head coach Ashley Wilson. The Mariners play in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
“It’s been a hard and long process,” Streitmatter said about her decision. “Mitchell was one of the first schools I toured last year, and I loved it. I love knowing people believe in me and what I can do on the court. Two years ago, I didn’t see myself playing in college or even for the rest of high school, but once I started to push myself and see how much more I could grow, I regained my love for the sport.”
The all-star game, which returned this year following a four-year absence because of Covid, was created by Al Faria, a 1961 Barnstable High School graduate and longtime official. The first girls’ game was held in 1985; the boys’ debut came in 1987.
Since 1989, the games have the current format, pitting the best players from the Upper Cape against those from the Lower Cape.
The teams of 15 players are selected by Faria from a list compiled by athletic directors and head coaches, with at least one player from each school.
The Nauset girls missed out on the playoffs this season, ending with a 7-13 mark.
“We played way better than we did last year,” Streitmatter said of the Warriors’ season. “Obviously, we didn’t accomplish what we wanted, but I’m happy overall with how we played.”
Junior Joey Berardi was selected for the Lower Cape boys team but was unable to participate.
The Nauset Warriors Booster Club, meanwhile, will be hosting its 7th annual Evening for Champions at the Pelham House on Saturday, March 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased at nausetboosters.com.
