EASTHAM — Junior Logan Poulin had two goals and an assist, senior Julian Krivos recorded a goal and two assists, and junior Zach Coelho posted his second playoff shutout to help top-ranked Nauset ease past no. 12 Somerset Berkley 6-0 in the MIAA Division 3 semifinals at Gallo Ice Arena on Sunday.
Nauset roared to a 3-0 lead for a second straight playoff game on goals by senior Aaron Howard, Poulin, and sophomore Jake Eldredge. Poulin notched his second of the game 46 seconds into the second period, and junior Colin Ward made it 5-0 with a tap-in. Krivos then got his stick on junior Andrew Bohannon’s shot to put an exclamation mark on the win.
“You have to be able to score in many different ways,” said Coach Connor Brickley. “Sometimes you have to simplify the game and get gritty around the net.”
The Warrior boys (22-1-1) will face no. 6 Marblehead at TD Garden in Boston in the program’s first state title game since 2004.
The Nauset-Monomoy girls hockey team’s historic season ended abruptly in the Division 2 quarterfinals as it lost 2-1 to no. 5 Algonquin Regional at the Bog in Kingston on March 6.
The fourth-ranked Warriors battled the Titans through two scoreless periods before Algonquin took the lead 1:49 into the third period. Nauset junior Carly Brand scored a short-handed breakaway goal with 4:46 left to force overtime.
But senior Emily Johns cut in across the goal from the right and poked the puck past Olivia Avellar for the game-winning goal with 4:46 remaining in overtime to send the Titans to the semifinals.
“To be in this environment and for them to get a taste of what it feels like in a loss is tough right now, but it’s something you hold onto, you take it and move on,” said Warriors Head Coach Zach Wells. “Hopefully, they take that attitude into next season.”
Nauset-Monomoy finished the season with an 18-3-1 overall record and its first-ever quarterfinal appearance.
Senior Paytah Dill, juniors Adian Brown, Paytah Dill and sophomore Reed Dill represented Nauset at the New Balance Nationals hosted at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston where they set the school record for the 4×60 meter hurdles with a time of 32.86.
