EASTHAM — The Nauset boys hockey team cemented its position at the top of MIAA Division 3 with home victories over highly ranked Nantucket and Scituate before shutting out Monomoy on Senior Night.
The Warriors avenged their lone defeat of the season, at Nantucket on Dec. 13, with an emphatic 6-2 win over the Whalers on Thursday, scoring 5 straight third-period goals to wipe out a 2-1 deficit. Nauset trailed at both intermissions. Six different players scored, with sophomore Logan Miller recording the goal that put Nauset ahead with 10 minutes to play.
Nauset then held off second-ranked Scituate in a 4-3 win on Saturday. The Warriors let a 3-0 lead slip away, with the Sailors drawing even on a power play at the 6:26 mark of the third period. But the Warriors regrouped and killed off a penalty before freshman Sam Mayhew tallied his second goal of the game to break the deadlock with 2:08 remaining. Mayhew tipped Logan Poulin’s shot in from the blue line for a power-play goal.
Nauset improved to 17-1-1 on the season with a 6-0 shutout of Monomoy on Monday. After a scoreless first period, senior Cam Connery, who had a goal and an assist, and freshman Brody Bassett both scored to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead, and they never looked back. Poulin and sophomore Zach Weiner both had a goal and an assist, while seniors Joe McManus and Aaron Howard each record a goal.
The Warriors were scheduled to play Plymouth North on Wednesday.
Nauset-Monomoy girls hockey rebounded from a loss that ended their 15-game unbeaten streak with a lopsided 5-1 win over Martha’s Vineyard on Saturday at Charles Moore Arena. Sophomore Gaby Bassett scored twice for the Warriors.
The Warriors, who moved to 15-2-1overall, played Bishop Feehan on Wednesday.
The boys and girls hockey teams will now await their postseason fate. They were ranked first and fourth, respectively, in the final power rankings of the season on Friday.
Senior wrestler Peter Silvernail beat Ashland High School’s Matt Terry to place third overall in the 285-pound class and book his spot at the All-State Tournament. He beat Kip King of Wakefield High School in the quarterfinals and Nathan Hartunian of Wayland High School in the round of 16.
Nauset boys track placed sixth at the Division 4 Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on Sunday, while the girls came in 10th. Wakefield Memorial was crowned boys champion and Holliston the girls champion.
The boys relay team, juniors Aidan Brown, Isaiah Robinson, and Dominic Bebber and senior Damian Bebber, finished second in the 4×200 relay with a school record time of 1:34.60.
Brown, meanwhile, placed second individually in the 55-meter hurdles with a personal and school record of 7.81 seconds. He also had a personal best in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.75 seconds.
Junior Madeline Mahoney placed fourth in the 1,000 meters and fifth in the 2-mile with a personal best time of 11:57.96. Sophomore Violet Roche was fifth in the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches.
The Nauset girls 400-yard freestyle relay team finished ninth at the Division 2 State Championship hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday. The team, sophomore Laura Kaser, eighth-grader Alera Michaud, and seniors Nina Mako and Izzy Hardwicke, swam in a time of 3:55.13.
Kaser, Michaud, Hardwicke, and junior Isabel Colella finished 11th in the girls 200-yard freestyle.
Boys basketball earned a hard-fought victory over Falmouth on Senior Night Friday at Nauset Regional Middle School. The Warriors, who trailed by 2 points at halftime, overcame a 10-point first-quarter deficit and outscored the Clippers 49-28 over the final three periods.
The Warriors lost 61-55 to Plymouth South in the opening game of Winterfest hosted by Bourne High School on Sunday but responded with a 73-69 win against Monomoy on Monday. They closed out their season against Dennis-Yarmouth Regional on Wednesday.
Girls basketball ended the year with a 52-26 defeat at Falmouth to fall to 7-13. Senior Jordyn Streitmatter had a team-high 12 points to bring her season total to 330 points.
