EASTHAM — The Nauset High boys indoor track team capped a banner week by beating Barnstable 53-46 on Tuesday to finish the regular season undefeated, 6-0, and claim the Cape and Islands League championship. The girls team bested the Red Hawks 60-40 to end the regular season with a 5-1 mark.
On Sunday the boys and girls teams finished fourth and seventh, respectively, at the MSTCA Division 4 state relays at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The shuttle hurdle relay teams both won — the first time since 1980 that both teams placed first in the same event.
The boys, senior Paytah Dill, juniors Aidan Brown and Isaiah Robinson, and sophomore Reed Dill, set meet and school records with a time of 26.87, qualifying for nationals. The long jump team finished fourth overall with senior P. Dill breaking the school indoor long jump record with a leap of 20 feet, 7¾ inches.
The girls — seniors Rebecca Cahill, Mackenzie Still, and Haley Labdon and sophomore Anika Valli — won the shuttle hurdle relay in 32.09. The high jump relay team — Cahill and sophomores Violet Roche and Elizabeth Sanders — placed first, and the girls 1600 sprint medley relay team took second in 4:22.27.
“As a senior, it feels great to go out with a bang,” said Cahill.
Boys hockey maintained its position at the top of the MIAA Division 3 rankings, beating Barnstable 6-3 on Saturday. It was the Warriors’ sixth straight win; they are 9-1-1 overall.
Junior Colin Ward scored twice, classmate Logan Poulin had a goal and an assist, sophomore Jake Eldredge recorded two assists, and junior Zach Coelho picked up the win in net.
“That performance was unacceptable,” said Head Coach Connor Brickley after the Warriors let a 5-1 lead dwindle to just two goals. “It’s about starting the right way and finishing the right way. If you take your foot off the gas and let good teams get back in the game, you put yourself in a dangerous situation.”
Nauset/Monomoy girls hockey (10-1-1) battled to a 2-2 tie with Falmouth on Saturday. That ended the Warriors’ winning streak at 9 but extended their unbeaten run to 10 games. They held firm at fourth in the Division 2 rankings.
Led by senior Jill Ernstrom’s 24 points, the girls basketball team overcame a 4-point halftime deficit and then held on after Monomoy Regional made a late fourth-quarter charge. Nauset edged the Sharks 48-42. The Warriors improved to 6-6 overall.
Boys basketball, meanwhile, suffered a fifth straight defeat, losing to Nantucket 70-55 and Wareham 84-53 on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
Nauset girls swimming picked up a 92-62 win over Martha’s Vineyard on Tuesday while the boys lost 98-72 to the Vineyarders.
