EASTHAM — The Nauset boys and girls hockey teams and girls basketball team all bounced back from recent losses while junior wrestler Peter Silvernail placed first at his weight at the Sandwich Kickoff Tournament. Boys hoops, meanwhile, earned their first victory of the year.
Junior Logan Poulin recorded his second hat trick in three games, tallying five points in Nauset’s 7-0 hockey win over Plymouth North on Saturday night at Charles Moore Arena.
Senior Julian Krivos, who scored 20 seconds into the game, had two goals and an assist, and sophomore Zach Weiner notched his first varsity goal to go with an assist. Junior goalie Zach Coelho secured his first shutout.
“One of the keys to our success was starting on time,” said Warriors Coach Connor Brickley. “The first two games we gave up the first goal. You could tell the emotion and energy that comes from scoring first.”
The Warriors led 4-0 after the first period and pushed the game out of reach when Poulin scored on the power play three minutes into the second period.
Plymouth North struggled to stay out of the box and was assessed eight penalties, including a double minor for cross checking. The Warriors were just 1 for 8 with the man advantage, but they did not lack chances.
They improved to 2-1 on the season, bouncing back from a defeat at Nantucket last Wednesday.
Girls hockey struck twice in the third period en route to a 4-1 win over Barnstable on Saturday night. Junior Sophia Boucher scored twice for the Warriors.
Boucher opened the game with a goal at the 9:00 mark and adding a second with 5:08 to play in the second period. Barnstable cut the deficit in half with a goal just before intermission.
The Warriors responded quickly, making it 3-1 early in the third period, and then added an empty net goal for insurance to improve to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Junior Peter Silvernail won the 285-pound class at the Sandwich tournament on Saturday, defeating Robert Tran of Taunton High School in the final. Freshman Chaz Thomas, who is at Cape Cod Tech, came second in the 190-pound class, losing to Sandwich’s Luke Steele in the final.
Freshman Sean Sheehan placed sixth at 106 pounds in a no-contest bout with Wilson Pereira of Taunton.
Nauset girls basketball split a pair of games, rebounding from an overtime defeat to Plymouth South last Thursday with a strong win at Monomoy Regional on Tuesday. Senior Jordyn Streitmatter scored 21 points in Thursday’s 56-54 loss.
The Warriors responded with a resounding 62-49 win at Monomoy behind Streitmatter’s career-high night to move to 2-2 on the season.
Nauset boys basketball (1-3) picked up its first win of the season after losing by 40 points at Old Rochester Regional on Friday night. The Warriors held on to beat Monomoy 37-34 in a battle that ended with senior Jacob Knight blocking a 3-point attempt to tie the game. Trailing by one after three quarters, they outscored the Sharks 6-2 over the last 8 minutes. Junior Joey Berardi led the way with 13 points, and senior Liam Johnston added 11 points.
Boys and girls swimming both won their meets against St. John Paul II on Tuesday at Willy’s Gym. The boys raced away with a 77-37 victory to remain unbeaten, while the girls edged the Lions 89-71 to improve to 1-1.
