EASTHAM — The Nauset boys and girls hockey teams picked up wins to start their seasons, while the boys and girls swim teams placed first at the Cape & Islands Relays.
Junior Logan Poulin picked up where he left off last season, tallying a hat trick and two assists, senior Joe McManus added two goals and an assist, and the Warriors boys hockey team beat Sandwich High School 7-3 in the season opener on Saturday night at Gallo Ice Arena. Senior Julian Krivos and sophomore Jake Eldredge each scored a goal.
McManus’s goal made it 3-3 with 5:54 to go in the second period of a close game, which sparked the Warriors to life. They would go on to score five straight goals.
Junior Carly Brand and sophomore Gaby Bassett each scored twice, senior Olivia Avellar made 39 saves in goal, and Nauset girls hockey defeated Pope Francis Prep 5-3 at Charles Moore Arena on Sunday.
The Warriors trailed 1-0 after the opening period, but Brand tied the game 2:09 into the second following an individual effort that culminated in the forward picking out the top corner.
In the span of 27 seconds, the Cardinals took the lead back, but Bassett tied the game at 2-2 when she poked the puck into the net with 8:37 left. Sienna Reeves then gave Nauset a 3-2 lead after coming out of the penalty box, grabbing a loose puck and taking it all the way to net to close the period.
Pope Francis would make it 3-3 with 2:40 to play, but Nauset immediately responded when Brand scored her second of the game with 1:44 left. Bassett added an empty net goal to seal the victory.
The Nauset boys and girls swim teams edged Sandwich High School to take first place at the Cape & Islands Relays hosted by Sandwich on Saturday. The Warriors posted a combined score of 121, which was four points better than the Blue Knights. Nantucket High School came in third with 84 points.
