EASTHAM — Nauset boys lacrosse and boys tennis both saw their runs in their respective MIAA Division 2 State Tournaments come to an end. The losses brought to a close the Warriors’ spring sports season.
Second-ranked Nauset lacrosse lost 13-9 at home to unbeaten seventh-seed Marblehead in the quarterfinals on Monday. The Warriors ended their season with a 17-4 record, while the Magicians will advance to face No. 3 Duxbury in the semifinals.
The Warriors made a quick start in the game behind senior Payton Kender, who scored at the 11:01 mark to make it 1-0. But Marblehead set the tone for what would be a tight and back-and-forth game by tying the score with 9:51 left in the first quarter.
There were six ties and seven lead changes in the contest, the last coming when Marblehead scored three straight goals to build a 10-8 lead. The Warriors, who never led by more than a goal, twice came back from two-goal deficits. Senior Andrew Berardi notched his first goal of the game with 5:59 left in the third quarter to give Nauset an 8-7 lead.
The Magicians responded with senior Connor Cronin capping a three-goal burst with his fifth of the game to give the visitors a two-goal cushion. Senior Cooper McIntire pulled Nauset back by finishing off a no-look pass from Liam Johnston to cut it to a one-goal game, but they got no closer.
Marblehead built its largest lead of the game to that point at 12-9 when junior Gio Garibotto scored his first goal of the game with 7:09 left. The Magicians put the game out of reach with 88 seconds remaining.
The No. 22 ranked Warriors tennis team, meanwhile, was swept 5-0 at sixth-ranked Sharon in the Round of 16 on June 7. It was senior Rufus McCleery’s second loss of the season. They ended the year with a 15-3 record.
Junior Damian Bebber placed 13th overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.00 seconds at the New England Interscholastic Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Bangor, Maine on Saturday. The event was won by Greenwich’s Gianluca Bianchi.
