EASTHAM — Nauset’s lacrosse teams earned hard-fought wins last week while boys and girls track overcame Barnstable High School to open the spring sports season.
The boys lacrosse team pulled out a gritty 13-8 win over Mansfield on Thursday with seven different scorers. Senior Cooper McIntire led the way with a hat trick and four assists, and his classmate Andrew Berardi added four goals to go with one assist. Sophomore Zach Coehlo made nine saves in goal.
The girls, meanwhile, emerged victorious in a 9-8 overtime contest with St. John Paul II on Friday to open their season. Senior Bailey Nobili scored the game-winning goal on a free shot, beating the Lions’ goalie. The Warriors led 7-5 before the visitors fought back to tie the game. They then had to hold on over the final 1:30 to force the extra period with St. John Paul II in control in the closing stages.
Nauset boys track defeated Barnstable 78-58 on Thursday behind impressive showings from sophomores Isaiah Robinson and Peter Silvernail and senior Damian Bebber. Robinson placed first in the 100-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, and triple jump. Bebber won the 200-meter and 400-meter races as well as the long jump. Silvernail came in first in the shot put and discus.
The girls track team defeated Barnstable 78-61 with freshman Violet Roche winning three events, including the 400-meter race, the high jump, and the triple jump with a distance of 4 feet 6 inches. Senior Ceci LaBarge won the shot put and discus along with the 100-meter hurdles. Sophomore Rihanna Sutherland placed first in the 100 and 200 meters.
Nauset boys tennis won a 5-0 victory over St. John Paul II at the Mid-Cape Racquet Club. The girls, meanwhile, fell 3-2 at home to the Lions, who were last year’s Cape and Islands Champions.
Nauset softball was blanked 12-0 by last season’s Cape and Islands League Champions Sturgis East/West at Lopes Field on Monday. They were to play St. John Paul II on Wednesday.
Girls golf matched up against Monomoy at Eastward Ho! Country Club on Tuesday and with Falmouth at Captains Golf Course on Wednesday. Baseball was scheduled to open the season against St. John Paul II at McKeon Field on Tuesday.
