EASTHAM — Nauset’s indoor track and swim teams found success at their respective State Championships while the boys basketball team added a Cape and Islands Atlantic Division championship to their trophy cabinet, as the teams readied themselves for further postseason competition.
The Warriors boys and girls indoor track teams both had strong showings at the MIAA Division 3 Indoor Track Championship on Saturday, held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Sophomores Madeline Mahoney and Aidan Brown, junior Damien Bebber, and freshman Violet Roche all qualified for the Meet of Champions on Saturday, Feb. 25.
Mahoney won the 1000-meter race with a time of 3:01.16, Brown placed second in the 55-meter hurdles with a school record of 7.90 seconds, Bebber came in second in the 600-meter race posting a time of 1:24.68, and Roche finished fourth in the 300 meters with a time of 41.98 and then placed sixth in the high jump at 4 feet 10 inches.
Senior CeCi LaBarge, meanwhile, placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 32 feet 6 inches.
The Warriors boys swim team came in 13th with 70 points at the Division 2 State Championship hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday. The event was won by Weston with a team score of 326. Wayland (213) and Mystic Valley Regional Charter (176) placed second and third, respectively.
Senior Tim Johnson won Nauset’s first boys state title, setting a school record of 1:55.03 in the boys 200-yard individual medley. He edged runner-up Evan Lyons of Longmeadow High School by just 0.3 seconds.
Sophomore Peter Silvernail represented the Warriors at the MIAA Division 3 Wrestling State Championship in the 285-pound division, where he defeated Shawn Santer of John J. Duggan Academy 4-2 in Consolation of 8 #1 before losing to Danyel Ayala from Norton High School 2-0.
Nauset boys hockey defeated the Monomoy/Mashpee Monarchs 7-0 on Monday for their fourth win in a row. Senior co-captain Dan Deering netted a hat trick while the team’s leading scorer, sophomore Logan Poulin, tallied two goals and senior Logan Valine had a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie Matthew Swanson had a 13-save shutout — his second straight after blanking Dennis-Yarmouth last Wednesday.
The Warriors (14-5), who are fourth in the Division 3 power rankings, closed out their regular season schedule at Martha’s Vineyard on Wednesday.
The Cape Cod Furies — the combined girls team of Nauset, Monomoy, and Cape Cod Tech — defeated Pope Francis High School 2-0 at Fitzpatrick Ice Rink on Saturday afternoon. Defense duo freshman Samantha Clarke and junior Sienna Reeves each tallied goals while junior goalie Olivia Avellar recorded her second shutout of the year for the Furies (11-7-1).
The Furies, who are 14th in the latest MIAA Division 1 power rankings, played at Bishop Feehan High School on Wednesday to close out the regular season.
The Nauset girls basketball team dropped its final game of the season, 52-38, to Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School in what was the last game in the old Nauset gym. Junior Gabby Foster had a team high 14 points to go with five rebounds and classmate Jill Enstrom added 11 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
The Warriors, who had only one senior on this year’s roster, ended the year with a 5-15 record. It was a four-win improvement on a season ago.
Nauset boys and girls hockey and boys basketball will learn their playoff fates this week.
Basketball Champions
The Nauset boys basketball squad defeated Dennis-Yarmouth 67-52 on the road last Friday night to capture its second straight Cape and Islands Atlantic Conference championship.
“We wanted to win the league and it was great to fulfill that goal, but more important to us is the quality of play,” said Kevin Harrigan, who is in his first year as head basketball coach. “Our ultimate goal is to make a dent in the state tournament, and I think we’re tracking in a direction where we will be a team that is difficult to beat.”
Nauset went 7-1 in league play and finished the regular season with an 12-8 overall record to secure a play-in game in the MIAA Division 2 State Tournament. The Warriors, who were unbeaten in the conference a season ago, suffered their lone loss at Barnstable on Jan. 17.
Harrigan’s team had just two losing streaks this season — of three games and two games. Following back-to-back losses to Cape Cod Academy and Old Rochester, the Warriors rattled off six consecutive victories. That defined their year.
“It’s win the Cape and make the playoffs,” Nauset senior captain Dillon White said. “As seniors, it was our turn to lead. I think we did a great job accomplishing the goals we set.”
The Warriors wrapped up the regular season at the Winterfest Tournament hosted by Bourne High School. They dropped their first game to Plymouth South High School by eight points on Sunday but bounced back with an emphatic 80-57 win over Monomoy to build momentum for postseason play.
“It’s been a successful season with a lot of room still to grow as players and coaches,” Harrigan said. “I think our program is going to be one that will be formidable for years to come.”
