EASTHAM — The Nauset High boys basketball team continued its quest to make the playoffs last week while the track teams had success at the Cape and Islands League Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, where the girls placed second and the boys finished third on Saturday.
The Dennis-Yarmouth girls won with a score of 116.50, while Nauset had 85. Barnstable High was third with a score of 73.50. The Nauset girls won a trio of events. Sophomore Madeline Mahoney was first in the 1,000 meters (3:01.51), senior Sarah Cornell claimed the top spot in the 55-meter hurdles (9.56), and senior Ceci LaBarge placed first in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 8.5 inches.
Freshman Violet Roche, meanwhile, placed second in the 200 meters and sophomore Rihanna Sutherland was second in both the 55-meter dash and the long jump, with a jump of 15 feet, 10 inches.
Falmouth topped the boys competition with 98 points; Barnstable was second with 77; Nauset came in at 67. Sophomore Adian Brown won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.54 seconds while junior Damien Bebber came in first in the 300-meter dash (37.42) and 600 meters (1:30.49).
The Warrior boys held off Barnstable in a 49-44 Senior Night basketball win — their third straight victory — on Friday to improve to 8-7 on the season with three regular season games remaining. They were scheduled to play at Sandwich on Tuesday.
The Warrior girls were unable to snap their losing streak, which reached three in a 49-40 loss to Barnstable on Feb. 2. The girls are 5-10 on the season and were scheduled to host Sandwich on Tuesday.
Nauset boys hockey bounced back from a midweek loss to Barnstable with a convincing 8-3 triumph over St. John Paul II on Saturday. The Warriors stood at 10-4 before this week’s home game against Falmouth.
