EASTHAM — The boys ice hockey team’s dominant performance against Division 1 Newton North High School last Friday highlighted the winter break for Nauset Regional High School athletics. It was a big win for the team, which had suffered its first loss of the season at Plymouth North’s Armstrong Rink two days earlier.
Nauset defeated Newton North 7-1 behind a hat trick and an assist from sophomore forward Logan Poulin of Truro. Poulin tallied his third goal with 0.4 seconds left in the second period to give the Warriors a 6-0 lead. It was Poulin’s third hat trick in five games this season.
Freshman goalie Arthur Figueiredo of Brewster, meanwhile, improved to 2-0 as a starter in the net. Freshman defenseman Jake Eldredge of Brewster and senior forward Logan Valine of Harwich each recorded a goal and an assist in the win.
The Warriors held Newton scoreless until the 4:15 mark of the third period. The boys are now 4-1 on the year after the Dec. 28 4-3 loss to Plymouth North. They were scheduled to face the reigning Division 4 state champions from Sandwich High School on Wednesday.
The Cape Cod Furies girls hockey team fell 3-0 to St. Mary’s Junior-Senior High School at Connery Ice Arena on Saturday. The Furies made a statement by battling to a scoreless tie in the first period against the top-ranked girls hockey team in Massachusetts before giving up two goals in the second period. The Spartans then tacked on a final goal in the third period.
The Furies, who were scheduled to play Sandwich High School on Wednesday, stood at 4-1-1 on the season.
The Nauset boys basketball team saw a two-game winning streak come to an end at Plymouth North last Thursday. The Warriors dropped a 66-58 decision to fall to 3-2 on the season. They were slated to complete a stretch of five straight road games at Cape Cod Academy on Wednesday.
The girls basketball team, meanwhile, endured a 63-31 loss to Plymouth North at their home court on Thursday. It was their second straight defeat after back-to-back wins over Martha’s Vineyard and Dighton-Rehoboth. The Warriors — holding a 3-4 record — were scheduled to play Cape Cod Academy on Wednesday.
The boys and girls indoor track teams were scheduled to have a meet against Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School at Wheaton College on Tuesday.
