EASTHAM — The Nauset boys basketball team’s dramatic win on Nantucket highlighted a high school sports week that was disrupted by the winter storm that hit the region.
The Warriors defeated Nantucket High 60-58 on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by senior forward Patrick O’Keefe to improve to 2-1 on the season under first-year head coach Kevin Harrigan.
Nauset led by 10 points at halftime, but Nantucket surged back in the second half. The Whalers battled to within 57-54 with 35 seconds to go and then scored four straight points at the free throw line to take a one-point advantage with 18 seconds to play.
The Warriors broke the Whalers’ two-man press, nearly turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, and called time. Coming out of the time-out, Andrew Berardi drew pressure at the top of the three-point arc and then found O’Keefe running to the corner with a jump pass. O’Keefe’s quick release beat the clock, hit the far side of the rim, and dropped in.
The shorthanded boys and girls swimming teams, meanwhile, each picked up victories over Barnstable High School at Willy’s Gym in Eastham. Both teams improved to 2-0 on the season.
The boys won 94-48 behind strong performances from seniors Roman Gorman and Tim Johnson and juniors Tom Foley and Will Crowell. All four each won two individual races, including the 100-yard backstroke, the 200 individual medley, the 50, 100, 200, and 500 freestyle races, the 100 butterfly, and the 100 breaststroke.
The sophomore trio of Erin McFarland, Isabel Colella, and Lila Keeney led the girls to a 78-77 win. The trio also partnered for wins in the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay with times of 4:21:16 and 2:07:19 respectively.
Both boys and girls ice hockey games against Nantucket and Old Rochester High School, respectively, were postponed because of the storm last Friday. The girls were scheduled to play King Philip High School on Tuesday, while the boys were traveling to Plymouth North High School on Wednesday.
Boys and girls basketball returned to action with a double-header at Monomoy Regional High School on Tuesday.
