EASTHAM — The Nauset High boys soccer team, ranked number 22 in postseason play in its division, upended 11th-ranked Billerica Memorial 2-1 on Saturday to reach the Round of 16 in the Division 2 State Tournament. The next game is on Thursday, Nov. 10 against Melrose.
The soccer boys are the lone Warriors team remaining in action in the postseason after the girls soccer team fell in the first round at Longmeadow High School on Sunday. The field hockey team also dropped a 2-1 decision at Hopkinton High School and was eliminated from the tournament.
The number 22 ranked Nauset girls had secured a 1-0 soccer victory over number 43 Somerset-Berkley behind Olivia Avellar’s first-half header to set up a matchup with the Longmeadow Lancers.
Longmeadow led 1-0 at halftime before Avellar scored an equalizer with 22 minutes to play. But the 11th-ranked Lancers retook the lead with 9 minutes to go and added a third tally before the final whistle to win 3-1.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the number 20 ranked Nauset field hockey team. The Warriors and number 13 Hopkinton were deadlocked at one-all when the Hillers scored with a minute left in regulation.
The Nauset football team, meanwhile, lost 27-20 at Plymouth North in the nonqualifier first round. The Warriors led 14-7 at halftime, but the Blue Eagles flipped the score with two touchdowns in the third quarter. Nauset couldn’t recover.
