EASTHAM — The Wellfleet Breakers Soccer Club concluded their 12th season on Aug. 3 with a loss to the Harwich Blues in the Cape Cod Amateur Soccer League’s Davis Cup semifinals.
After concluding the regular season with a 4-6-2 record, the Breakers made it into the semifinals for the second time in three years. The team’s 6-1 victory over the Sandwich Knights in the quarterfinals “proved to be the best match put together by any Breakers team in their 12-year history,” said General Manager Anthony Conte.
The Harwich Blues were undefeated in the regular season and were therefore named champions of the CCSL for this year. The Davis Cup, however, is a postseason playoff competition among the league’s seven club teams. The Nauset Storm defeated the Blues to win the Davis Cup on Sunday, Aug. 7.
After a slow start, the Breakers enjoyed a five-match unbeaten streak in midseason that carried them into the playoffs. Twin brothers Kevon and Evon Campbell were strong contributors to the team, with Kevon scoring 10 goals during the season. Evon was named the team’s most valuable player.
In the tournament semifinal against the Blues, the Breakers came out strong with an early goal from Ramon Ramires, but they “were unable to overcome a 3-1 halftime deficit,” according to Conte. Conor Kenny added one more goal for the Breakers late in the second half, but the team ultimately fell to the Blues 6-2.
This season, Conte said, the Breakers were led by former U.S. and European professional player Kenny Doublette. “His skills and enthusiasm motivated and elevated the play of many of the younger players,” according to Conte.
Four former Nauset Regional High School players — Anthony Lovati, Nick Norman, Laird Parker, and Connor Cushing — have “become the nucleus and future of the club,” said Conte. Norman and Parker play for Curry College, while Cushing just completed his first year at Wheaton College.
Looking ahead, Conte was particularly encouraged by the display put on by the Breakers in their quarterfinal win this season.
“Sharp as can be,” he said, “the boys came together to put on a passing and shooting display that clearly showed the potential of this group going into next season.”
