EASTHAM — Connor Brickley is sticking to his word in his first year as head coach of the Cape Cod Furies girls ice hockey team. Before the season started, Brickley said he wanted to make sure the program was not taking a step back.
“There’s a lot of expectation and a lot of positive momentum with this program, especially this year,” he said in November. “They’re trending in the right direction.”
The Furies, a co-op made up of student athletes from Nauset, Monomoy, and Cape Cod Tech, improved to 6-1-2 on the season after a 3-1 win over Barnstable on Jan. 22 and a 1-1 tie against a co-op team from Dennis-Yarmouth, Cape Cod Academy, and St. John Paul II. The Furies were ranked seventh in the state out of 39 teams in Division 1 as of Tuesday.
The Nauset boys ice hockey team has done its best to match the girls. The boys were ranked 11 out of 47 teams in Division 3 with an 8-3 record as of Tuesday. Both teams have fewer than 10 games to go before the regular season ends on Feb. 24.
On Jan. 20, the MIAA’s Tournament Management Committee voted down a proposal by the state’s Hockey Committee to extend the cutoff date to Feb. 27. That would have given teams one more weekend to make up games postponed because of Covid-19.
The two hockey teams have had to postpone and reschedule a combined seven games so far this season. But both teams will have a chance to compete in the playoffs if they can maintain their winning ways.
The Nauset boys basketball team improved to 5-2 on the season with a 64-52 road win against Martha’s Vineyard on Monday. The team was scheduled to play Plymouth North at home on Wednesday.
