EASTHAM — It was a beautiful night for football at Nauset Regional High School on Friday, Sept. 10 — the first fall football game for the Warriors since 2019. The Cape and Islands League had been forced to move its football season to the spring last year because of the pandemic.
Last season, fan attendance was limited. But on Friday a fair number turned out to watch the Warriors play a game that was anything but beautiful. Nauset fell hard, 43-0, to the Pembroke Titans, who play in the South Shore’s Patriot League Fisher Division. The game was essentially over after the first half, with the Titans ahead 35-0.
The Warriors couldn’t get anything going on offense and nearly fumbled two possessions in a row to the Titans in the second quarter, with the team already down 27-0. Pembroke came out strong and its defense played aggressively. Nauset looked a little shell-shocked early on and couldn’t match the Titans’ energy.
Nauset has a fairly young team this year with just four seniors and 15 underclassmen on the roster. The team will need to regroup and put on a better showing at its home field this Friday against another tough opponent in Hopkinton High School.
Meanwhile, the girls soccer and boys soccer teams are both off to 2-0 starts. The girls soccer team has outscored its opponents 14-1 in its first two games, defeating Monomoy Regional 10-1 at home on Sept. 7 and shutting out Barnstable 4-0 on its home field on Sept. 10.
The boys soccer squad edged New Bedford 1-0 on the road on Sept. 7, then scored a convincing 6-1 victory over Barnstable at home on Sept. 11.
Girls field hockey is also perfect on the season so far, having won all three of its games without giving up a single goal. The squad beat Carver twice, 3-0 on Sept. 8 and 2-0 on Sept. 13, and defeated Martha’s Vineyard 4-0 on Sept. 10.
