PROVINCETOWN — The Provincetown Yacht Club’s racing series was delayed on Saturday, Aug. 14 at the last minute by a short period of high winds from about 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. But the Commodore received Provincetown Harbormaster Don German’s warning and most boats high-tailed it to behind the breakwater to wait it out.
The storm’s effects were gone by 1:45 and two races were held. Capt. Joel Shaw skippered his boat Selma Rose to a first-place finish in the first race with a time of 28:22 for the 2.1-mile course. Capt. Jeff Haley’s boat Ida took the second three-mile race with a time of 37:56.
The week before, Aug. 7, saw a “Rhodes show” with Selma Rose, captained by Shaw, capturing first place, Snark III, captained by Jack Peak, in second place, and Sparkle Marie II, captained by George Lynde, in third place in the one race of the day. All three boats are classified as Rhodes 19s.
Capt. Will Buckley was at the helm of Apsara for his first race of the season, while Commodore Robillard and crew Jeff Lick manned the committee boat.
Coot, captained by A.G. Breitenstein, and Peak’s Snark III earned their first wins of the season on Saturday, July 31.
Congratulations are in order for Selma Rose, the overall winner of the club’s Series II. —Ryan Fitzgerald
