EASTHAM — The Nauset Warriors boys basketball team came away with a win at the buzzer against Barnstable on Monday in the first round of the Cape and Islands League tournament.
The teams were tied 56-56 with just a few seconds left in the first-round match when Nauset junior Keleb Daniels grabbed a rebound under the hoop and put it back quickly as time expired. It gave the Warriors the victory, and a ticket to the tournament semifinals.
The team was scheduled to play the Falmouth Clippers on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The boys team finished its regular season with 7-5 record.
Meanwhile, the girls basketball team took care of first-round business as well, defeating the Nantucket Whalers 64-30. Senior leader Avery Burns single-handedly outscored the Whalers, with 32 points in the game.
The Warriors finished the regular season 11-1. A 51-22 loss to the Falmouth Clippers on Feb. 18 was their only defeat of the year.
The girls were scheduled to host the Sandwich Blue Knights in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday.
As with fall sports, there will be no state tournament play due to Covid-19, so the league tournament will be the final stretch of play for winter sports teams this season.
The boys ice hockey team finished its regular season 3-8-1. The Warriors were scheduled to travel to Falmouth to face off against the top-seeded Clippers on Wednesday, Feb. 24 in the first round of its league tournament at press time.
The Cape Cod Furies, a co-op girls ice hockey team made up of students from Nauset, Monomoy, and Cape Cod Tech, finished 2-4-5 on the season. As of press time, the team was scheduled to play its first-round tournament match against another co-op team from Dennis-Yarmouth, Cape Cod Academy, and St. John Paul at Charles Moore Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
The Nauset figure skating team has been preparing for the last two months for the High School Artistic Free Skate Cyber Challenge. The team performed their individual programs on Sunday, Feb. 21 and video submissions will be uploaded to be judged from Feb. 27 through March 12.
