EASTHAM — The Nauset boys ice hockey team was on the verge of losing its third game to start the season against the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins on Jan. 23. The Warriors had lost 7-0 to Falmouth a few days before and found themselves down 3-1 with just over five minutes left in the second period against D-Y.
But Nauset junior Cooper Giuliano found the back of the net with 1:10 left to make the score 3-2. Just 25 seconds later, sophomore Pete Murphy scored again for Nauset to tie the game.
Junior Zach Roberts scored his second goal of the game to give the Warriors a 4-3 edge with 5:30 left in the final period. The Dolphins struck back with a game-tying goal just one minute later.
The game ended 4-4 — not the outcome Nauset was hoping for — but the team showed perseverance in its comeback and avoided an 0-3 start.
Meanwhile, the Cape Cod Furies, a co-op girls hockey team with students from Monomoy, Nauset, and Cape Cod Tech, have checked each column to start the season. The team started with a 1-1 tie against Martha’s Vineyard, beat Nantucket 5-0, then lost on Jan. 23 to Barnstable 2-0.
The team lost to Falmouth 3-1 on Jan. 25. Falmouth got off to an early 1-0 lead but Nauset junior Charlotte Manganaro scored a goal with 4:45 left in the second period to tie the game 1-1.
Falmouth took the lead back at 2-1 with a score in the middle of the third period and then a late empty-net goal sealed the 3-1 victory. The Furies are now 1-2-1.
Nauset basketball continues to thrive. The girls are 4-0 and the boys 3-1 following wins over Barnstable on Jan. 22. The girls beat the Red Raiders on the road 57-43. The boys handled Barnstable easily, winning 67-37. Will Casey (11 points), Seth Asiimwe (10) and Keleb Daniels (10) led the way for the Warriors.
Nauset swimming is also off to a solid start, as the boys team is 3-1 and the girls are 2-2.
