Virgo season is upon us, and with it, the season of the harvest. Virgo’s crop is mainly nightshades, like potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers. Their genus, Solanum, may refer to their sun (sol) -like flowers, or to the verb solare, meaning “to soothe.” Indeed, much like Virgo’s mythological inspiration, Persephone, daughter of the harvest goddess Demeter, whose sunny demeanor roused Hades to kidnap her in order to soothe his underworld blues, Virgos have innate maternal qualities that make them caring companions. But these nightshade nannies may yet be deadly. Virgos are known for their bitter bite, and, much like Persephone, may only spend half of their time under the summer sun, sweet as a late August plum. Their dark side, however, is a taste of winter’s harshness, like a raw potato. Pass the salt.
