Walking up our road
On a chilly April morning
I encountered two locals
Did you see those daffodils?
The tall one asked by way of greeting
One day they were there in full bloom
Said her companion
And the next day they were gone
It’s a shame to think we have
Thieves on our neighborhood
Well, I didn’t take them, I said
I should hope not
The tall one added
We said our good mornings.
Walking down our road
In the May sunshine
We kept watching the lilacs
By our summer neighbor’s yard
A little closer to bloom each morning
Then one sparkling day
When the house was still empty
They were perfect
My lover smiled transgressively
And kept walking a pace behind
At home the lilacs filled a blue vase
Filling the room with fragrance
Even you didn’t see me, she said.
