Editor’s note: Maybe it’s anxiety about the election ahead. It seems as if worry has quieted the usual clamor of civic and community life here. With so many of us at a loss for words, we asked artists who regularly contribute their work to the Independent to raise their inner voices in pictures. Whether we agree or disagree with what they’re saying, we do agree with Patrick Chappatte, a contributor of drawings to the New York Times, who, when the Times stopped printing single-panel political drawings in 2019, said, “In the insane world we live in, the art of visual commentary is needed more than ever. And so is humor.”
