David Earnest Gonsalves of Shelton, Conn., formerly of Provincetown, died on June 5, 2025 surrounded by family. The cause was respiratory failure. He was 80.

David was born in Wareham on Jan. 8, 1945 to the late Anita and Fernando Gonsalves. The family soon moved to Provincetown, where David forged his lifelong passion for automobiles.
He attended Provincetown schools and quickly demonstrated a keen intellect and a fascination with cars. His talents led him to a career in auto body repair, and, in time, he proudly owned and operated his own repair shop in town. He once built a sports car with his friend Mikey Taverna, a testament to his skill.
David was known for being able to fix anything, and for his kindness and quiet humor. His writing, including poetry, was treasured by friends and family for its wisdom and wit.
He served in the Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Germany for two and a half years. Upon his return to Provincetown, he resumed work with cars and soon met his future wife, Martha. They married in 1979 and moved to Framingham, where they raised their son, Michael.
David never missed an opportunity to cheer at his grandchildren’s sports events, beam with pride at their accomplishments, and share a quiet word of encouragement.
David is survived by his wife, Martha; his son, Michael, and daughter-in-law Lorean; his grandsons, Christian, Jacob, and Leo; his sisters Betty White and Patricia Gonsalves; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Donna Gonsalves Johnson and Christine Gonsalves Johnson.
“He was the best brother someone could have,” said Betty. “I always knew that he loved me.”
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Gonsalves Family lot in the Provincetown Cemetery.
