Leaking Again
The Eastham library’s roof is leaking again.
Ever since its $9.6-million renovation was completed in 2016, a groove in the building’s roof, designed to direct rainwater away from nearby Depot Pond, has been a site for leaks, especially after heavy rains. The first fix was needed in fall 2019; the roof was repaired for a second time last November.
The first repairs were done under warranty by Nauset Construction. BluSky Restoration was hired for the second round and created a seal for the roof; that repair cost $25,715. Neither seems to have done the trick.
“We thought we had got it,” Library Director Melanie McKenzie said. “But two weeks ago, we noticed some discoloration on the ceiling panels, which is indicative of a leak.”
The leak, which appeared after a July 9 rainstorm, was in the same spot as before: in the triangular space near the circulation desk.
Town Manager Jacqui Beebe said the roof will be analyzed again this year by Waltham-based engineering firm Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, who provided assessments of the initial leak in 2019 and 2020.
The roof may get minor repairs during that time, but after that, “we’re not doing any more little fixes,” Beebe said. —Parker Mumford
