Conversation Starters
Board and Committee Reappointments
The select board on July 8 continued to review applications for appointment to a multitude of open positions across town boards and committees.
Sara Blandford and Casey Schmidt both applied for the three-year term on the board of health that was vacant after member Deborah Freeman resigned on July 1. Blandford wasn’t present at the meeting, so the select board voted to appoint Schmidt to the board. A quick turnaround on the appointment was needed, chair John Wolf said, so the board of health could hold a joint session with the select board on July 23 on septic regulations with a full set of members.
The select board appointed Lauren Arcomano, Jeffrey Sacks, Carl Sussman, Gary Sorkin, Roland Blair, and Emily Achtenberg to the Maurice’s Campground planning committee. Marianne Boswell and Robert Dupuis are alternates, and Ryan Curley and Farrukh Najmi will remain on the committee in town administrator-appointed slots.
Three candidates applied for two open positions on the planning board: Robert Fitzgerald, Alexander Emmons, and Gerry Parent, who is the current chair and was seeking reappointment.
The select board appointed Emmons, a carpenter, and reappointed Parent. The Cape Cod Times reported in 2017 that Parent had been on the planning board at that point for more than 30 years. They voted to appoint Fitzgerald as an alternate.
A Focus on the Shoreline
The Wellfleet Seasonal Residents Association and the Wellfleet Community Forum are holding a meeting on the town’s changing shoreline on Tuesday, July 15 at 7 p.m. at the Adult Community Center. The event is open to all.
Mark Borrelli, director of shoreline and seafloor mapping at the Center for Coastal Studies, will discuss coastal erosion, and Friends of Herring River Executive Director Christa Drew will give an update on the restoration project and construction of the Chequessett Neck bridge, according to a Community Forum press release. —Tyler Jager
