Joan Elizabeth Walter of Wellfleet died peacefully at the Meadows in Fulton, Miss. on June 17, 2025 after a courageous struggle with dementia. She was 86.

Joan was born on Sept. 12, 1938 in Paterson, N.J. to the late John and Jeannette Leonard. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s in reading and became a beloved elementary school teacher in the Wyckoff (N.J.) Public Schools.
After retiring, she continued to tutor young people and share her love of learning. She had a knack for the written word and delighted in writing to the local newspaper — often with suggestions on grammar, delivered with her signature wit and precision, said her daughter, Janine.
Joan married Robert Charles Walter in 1967, and until his death in 2021 they shared 54 years of marriage, creating a welcoming home filled with love, laughter, and quiet strength, Janine said. They began vacationing in Wellfleet in 1988 and moved to the Cape in 2000.
Joan was a devoted member of both St. Mary of the Harbor in Provincetown and St. James the Fisherman in Wellfleet and served on the altar guilds at both congregations. Her abiding faith was a cornerstone of her life, said Janine.
Joan was a woman of many passions. She was an avid reader and a keen birdwatcher, especially in her later years. She enjoyed tai chi and yoga, valuing both the mindfulness and movement they brought. With an eye for design, she brought beauty and intention to everything she touched, whether decorating her home or arranging a table setting. A reserved soul, Joan lived a life full of vitality and purpose.
She was a generous supporter of both Nauset Newcomers and Mass Appeal. Her husband often said there’s no telling how many lives she touched simply by acknowledging a special day with a handwritten note.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Janine Walter Hassell and husband Clay of Tupelo, Miss.; her step-grandchild, Jason Hassell of Nashville, Tenn.; her sister, Evelyn Bergstrom of Mystic, Conn.; her sister-in-law, Georgene Fabian of Holderness, N.H.; and several nephews and one niece.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, and her son, Michael Robert Walter.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, 2025 at St. Mary of the Harbor in Provincetown, followed by interment of her ashes at the Chapel of St. James the Fisherman in Wellfleet.
In lieu of flowers, donations may go to the Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod and the Lower Cape Outreach Council.
