Climate Action Plan
The Cape Cod Commission has joined Eastham’s quest to become more resilient in the face of climate change. The town and commission are currently working on a framework for climate-related investments to protect against the effects of coastal flooding and erosion.
The collaboration is a “pilot,” said project lead Steven Tupper, who is the deputy director of the Cape Cod Commission. “Some other towns have climate action plans, but Eastham wanted to go through a really robust process.”
Because moving forward takes “community buy-in,” according to Tupper, the commission is hosting a series of pop-up events to educate residents on the project. He’s also met with local business owners and members of the Nauset High School Green Club to hear their input and gather ideas.
“Sometimes ideas come out of these focus groups that we would never have thought of,” Tupper said. “We want the plan that’s developed at the end of be reflective of the community.”
Eastham already has an energy and climate action committee, a Hazard Mitigation Plan dating from 2020, and a 2024 residents survey with a 65-page analysis of the responses.
But the commission’s goal is to develop a more comprehensive plan — hopefully by the end of this year, Tupper said — and identify grant programs that can fund it.
The next pop-up table is planned for Thursday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Encounter Beach; another is planned for Thursday, July 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the same place. A workshop at the Eastham Library is set for Tuesday, July 29 at 6 p.m. —Parker Mumford
