Vision Zero for Eastham
The Cape Cod Commission’s “Vision Zero” plan for reducing traffic accidents across Cape Cod is now available for public review on its website.
“I think the town might want to offer comments,” said Don Emerson at the June 2 select board meeting. Emerson is an Eastham resident who is on the advisory committee for the plan. One reason, he said, was that there are grants available for projects included in it.
“If there are projects the town would like to advance with federal funds, this would be an opportunity to get on the list,” said Emerson.
The commission had already identified Brackett Road, Bridge Road, the Eastham rotary, Route 6, Herring Brook Road, Massasoit Road, Nauset Road, Old County Road, Old Orchard Road, Samoset Road, and Schoolhouse Road as areas of concern.
Four areas are marked in the draft plan as high injury networks: Brackett Road, Samoset Road from Route 6 to the intersection with Herring Brook Road, Cable Road at NRHS, and much of Route 6. Public comments compiled from previous sessions give special attention to a HAWK signal where Governor Prence Road meets Route 6, where motor vehicles often do not stop for pedestrians crossing.
The commission’s long-term proposals for mitigating serious accidents in these areas include installing a shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists along Samoset Road, a sidewalk along the entirety of Brackett Road and Cable Road, and considering a two-lane divided roadway for Route 6 with a median island.
One of the select board’s traffic goals, stop signs at the intersection of Bridge Road and Bayview Road, wasn’t among the commission’s priorities.
Comments are due on Thursday, June 12, Emerson said. —Parker Mumford
