About Those Kiosks…
The liveliest discussion at this year’s annual town meeting — with the exception of the citizen-petitioned Article 9A — concerned a pair of trailhead kiosks to be installed at Wiley Park. The town requested $11,000 in Community Preservation Act funds to build the kiosks, which ultimately passed as Article 8E.
That amount seemed like a lot to some voters — but it matches the bids the town received after a request for quotes was sent out last year.
Two of the four companies the town solicited sent in bids: Cape Associates, based in Eastham, and Timberhomes, based in Montpelier, Vt. The other two — Pinehaven Industries of Harwich and Jamaica Cottage Shop of South Londonderry, Vt. — chose not to bid because of the small scale of the project.
Cape Associates asked for $10,549.28. Timberhomes bid $3,400 for each kiosk, plus $850 for signboard covers and $1,200 for shipping, for a total of $8,850.
Open space committee chair Frances Lewis told town meeting voters that the kiosks would be worth the price and that they would establish rules for park visitors and help limit bicycle traffic in off-limits areas.
One kiosk will be located at the main park entrance to the northwest of the playground and the other will be at entrance on the east side of Herringbrook Road. —Parker Mumford
