Cultch Clutch
At the shellfish advisory board meeting on Jan. 6, Shellfish Constable Nancy Civetta gave an update on her department’s efforts to bring cultch — shells used as oyster-growing substrate — to town at a reasonable price.
Civetta said that the department is now getting cultch from a source in Harwich for $600 per truckload. This is less than the $1,250 per truckload the department has paid for it coming from New Bedford, Civetta said. But until recently, the Dept. of Public Works was driving truckloads of cultch from off-Cape in exchange for gas money from the Shellfish Dept.
At a Dec. 17 select board meeting, Civetta reported that the arrangement with the DPW had been called off because of repeated emails from Wellfleet resident Jude Ahern, who objected to the collaboration on the grounds that the DPW was too busy to take on the task.
Still, Civetta said that the last 12 loads of cultch that have been trucked to Wellfleet have cost the town $4,250 — less than half of the $10,000 the dept. allocated for this fiscal year. The figure is for one load from New Bedford for $1,250, five loads from Harwich for $600 each, and six loads courtesy of the DPW, Civetta said. —William von Herff
