Cleaner and Leaner
The select board on Nov. 18 voted to approve updates to the charge of the climate action committee. The committee, which had its first meeting in May 2021, was initially created to study “methods for minimizing the town’s carbon footprint” and “the town’s vulnerabilities to the consequences of climate change.”
The update replaces the word “carbon” with the broader term “greenhouse gas,” which includes methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases. It also says the committee will study methods to “ensure that the town’s energy infrastructure is cleaner, leaner, and more resilient.”
Chair Tom McNellis said his committee would work to identify external grants and financial incentives to fund the town’s efforts at energy efficiency.
“This doesn’t mean we’re not focusing on greenhouse gas reduction,” McNellis said. But he added, “Energy is the flipside of that coin.” Saving energy, he continued, “is also dollars saved for the residents.” —Parker Mumford
