Conversation Starters
Outdoor Burning Ban
Fire Chief Joseph Capello announced a ban on outdoor fires on Nov. 5 following a period of unprecedented dry weather and high winds that have created what he called “favorable conditions for wildfires to spread.”
The ban will be in effect until there is no longer a red flag warning from the National Weather Service for the state. It prohibits outdoor fires, including fire pits, chimineas, and outdoor cooking, and advises caution using lawnmowers, leaf blowers, all-terrain vehicles, and other power equipment. Ashes from fireplaces and wood stoves should be doused in water and covered with a tight-fitting lid. Cigarette butts, matches, and other smoking materials should not be tossed outside.
Plans for Maurice’s
The town will hold a second community meeting about affordable housing at Maurice’s Campground at 6 p.m. on Nov. 20 at the Adult Community Center.
The project’s master planning team will present draft plans for housing on the 21-acre site, which the town bought for $6.5 million in 2022.
At a first community meeting in August some 60 residents discussed what they hoped to see at the property, ranging from affordable homeownership opportunities to swathes of open space for recreation.
According to Sharon Rule-Agger, chair of the local housing partnership, this time those who come will see two proposed visions that the team developed following the August meeting.
“The idea is not necessarily to pick one proposal but to pick and choose aspects of each that should receive higher priority moving forward,” Rule-Agger told the Independent. —Sam Pollak
