Conversation Starters
Back on the Green
Saturday marked Eastham’s fourth annual “Halloween on the Green” celebration, a spooky answer to September’s Windmill Weekend. Children and adults from all over Cape Cod attended the event, which included trick-or-treating, corn hole, and a costume contest, judged by recreation commission chair Ed Casarella and member Gerrie Aleksiva and Eastham police officer Victoria Wagner.
“It feels like something out of a Hallmark movie,” said Christine Mickle, director of the town’s rec dept., on seeing so many community members together to celebrate the season. Halloween on the Green began in 2021 in hopes of tiding party-deprived residents over until the Turnip Festival in November.
Costumes were judged in three categories. Eastham’s Silva family, dressed as characters from SpongeBob SquarePants, won the group costume award; seven-year-old Olivia O’Conor, also from Eastham, took home a trophy for her rendition of Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas in the 7 and under category; and nine-year-old Sydney Deschamps of Harwich won the award for best costume in the 8-12 age bracket — she came dressed as Taylor Swift.
“I’ve always really liked her songs,” Deschamps said. “My favorite album of hers is Reputation.”
Countering Fear
State Sen. Julian Cyr will be at the Eastham Library on Thursday, Nov. 7 to participate in a discussion organized by the Refugee Support Team of the Nauset Interfaith Association, a group composed of clergy and lay leaders from 24 congregations on Cape Cod.
The gathering comes as a response to concerns expressed by Cyr about “hate and ‘unwelcome’ ” directed at immigrants on Cape Cod over the last year, said Tom Ryan of Nauset Interfaith. The meeting aims “to consider the realities and to begin charting responses” using education and communication, according to a flyer about the event.
Other participants will include the Cape Cod Coalition for Safe Communities and committees and groups from the Cape Cod Council of Churches, the First Parish Brewster UU, and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Harwich. The meeting will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. —Parker Mumford
