Conversation Starters
Raising the Walls
A wall-raising ceremony for four deed-restricted houses to be built by Habitat for Humanity has been scheduled for 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. The ceremony will mark the beginning of construction for the homes at 2254 Old Kings Highway, which are expected to take up to a year to complete. Because there is no parking available at the site, Habitat will offer a shuttle service from Wellfleet Elementary School between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m.
As part of the agreement signed with Habitat for Humanity by prospective homeowners, families must work alongside contractors and volunteers to assist in the construction of their new homes. Each household is expected to contribute 250 to 300 hours of manual labor as part of the organization’s “sweat equity” requirement.
One of the four future homeowners, Bridget Kennedy Badams, stands on what she calls the “front line of the housing crisis on the Lower Cape.” She works in Orleans as the intake coordinator for the Homeless Prevention Council. “I had given up the dream of home ownership until this opportunity presented itself,” Badams wrote in an email to the Independent. “We are just thrilled.” —Parker Mumford
Crabs, Worms, Sponges, Bird Flu
The town will hold its annual State of Wellfleet Harbor Conference at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Presentations will address the status of eelgrass, invasive crab species, the Herring River Restoration Project, mud-blister worms, and boring sponges in Wellfleet oysters, as well as avian influenza. All are welcome; attendance is free. —Sam Pollak
