Surf Clam Fishing
The Div. of Marine Fisheries is holding a public meeting at town hall on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. to discuss future management options for the surf clam fishery. Municipal officials and surf clam vessel owners are invited, along with the public.
The DMF “seeks to work with surf clam vessel owners to deploy vessel monitoring systems and, through geofencing techniques, keep vessels out of sensitive areas,” says a note from Town Manager Alex Morse to the select board.
The agency also wants to get input from local shellfish officials about areas that should be opened or closed, Morse wrote.
For many years, a tangle of state regulations made it unclear exactly which entities regulate the surf clam fishery in various depths of water, which has been an issue off Herring Cove in Provincetown.
Fishing that is legal in 40 feet of water can be illegal in 20 feet, and which agency should be enforcing the law can change as well. —Paul Benson
