Land Trust Meeting
The Cape Cod Commission is holding meetings aimed at the establishment of a nonprofit community land trust for Cape Cod that would be able to buy residential properties at a discount and then sell the homes to year-round residents at much lower prices while retaining ownership of the land itself.
The value of land accounts for around half the cost of residential real estate in many coastal communities, so by retaining the land, a land trust could sell homes at prices far below market rate.
The first public meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the Snow Library, 67 Main St. in Orleans.
The commission has been clear that it does not intend to direct or control the land trust but rather to organize meetings that would bring people together to get one started. —Paul Benson
