Joint Water Meeting
The select boards of Provincetown and Truro will meet together on Sept. 30 in Truro to discuss long-term plans for expanding the public water supply to the two towns.
Provincetown has been discussing with Cape Cod National Seashore the water dept.’s use of wellheads at the former Truro Air Force Station as a backup water supply and whether those wells could be upgraded and certified as part of the permanent water supply, Town Manager Alex Morse told the select board this week.
Water has been a point of contention in the past. A joint water resource working group, composed of staff from each town, has been meeting to establish a basis for the discussion.
The interests of the towns have more recently begun to converge, however. The state paid $1.2 million to connect the Cloverleaf affordable housing development in Truro to the municipal water supply.
The Stone’s Throw condo complex in North Truro expressed interest in connecting to municipal water when “forever chemicals” — PFAS — were discovered in the property’s well water. Many properties on Shore Road are already connected to the municipal water supply, and officials in Truro believe demand for town water is likely to increase. —Paul Benson
