Windmill Weekend
This weekend marks the 47th annual Windmill Weekend in Eastham, a multi-day event that celebrates the end of summer.
The weekend will kick off with a chicken and fish fry beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at the Elks Lodge, followed by a talent show. Saturday will feature a sand art contest and a “historical bike ride” at First Encounter Beach and a vehicle show at the Elks Lodge. Line dancing on Saturday afternoon is a new event this year.
The parade, running from Old Orchard Road to town hall, is on Sunday — its theme this year is “Back to the Farm.” There’s also a 5k road race starting at First Encounter Beach at 8 a.m. “It’s going to be a big deal,” said Joanna Stevens, president of the 2024 Windmill Weekend Committee, with double the usual number of entrants.
All weekend you’ll find live music, food vendors, and a beer and wine garden on Windmill Green. You’ll also find Town Manager Jacqui Beebe volunteering at the beer and wine garden with members of the select board, Stevens said.
Best to park at First Encounter Beach: shuttles will run from the parking lot there to the Windmill Green from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The shuttle will also stop at the Elks Lodge between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., but limited parking is available there because of the vehicle show, according to Stevens.
Route 6 between Old Orchard Road and Windmill Green will close from 10 to 11 a.m. on Sunday for the festival parade.
Stevens gave credit to the Eastham police and recreation depts. for their help making the event happen. “They really lighten the load,” she said. —William von Herff
