Where to Put the Pantry
The select board is still twiddling its thumbs over where to locate the Wellfleet Food Pantry temporarily before it gets a new home next to the Adult Community Center. A permanent structure in the center’s parking lot is expected to be completed in 2026, volunteer Cindy Batchelder said.
At its Aug. 20 meeting, the board discussed whether to allow the Pantry to operate out of a conference room in the newly purchased Gestalt International Study Center. Batchelder told the board that would save the nonprofit up to $70,000 it would otherwise have to spend on temporary trailers.
Voters approved a nonbinding resolution at the June 17 special town meeting allowing the use of the old South Wellfleet Fire Station on Route 6 for the Pantry, but town officials say that’s being used as a workshop for the DPW.
Board members hesitated on the Gestalt Center idea, however.
“We presented this to the voters as something we needed for office space and meeting space,” chair John Wolf said. “No mention was made at the time of this use, which would take up a significant portion of what could be meeting and seminar space.”
“My interest is what will ensure that the families who need it will continue to be fed,” member Ryan Curley said.
The board decided to postpone a vote on using the Gestalt Center until its Sept. 10 meeting. —Sam Pollak.
