Planning Shank Painter
A second community workshop for the town’s Shank Painter Road Planning Project will be held in the community room at the Province Landing apartments at 90 Shank Painter Road on Sept. 10 at 5 p.m.
A “community visioning” workshop, organized by the town’s consultants and Town Planner Thaddeus Soulé, took place on July 10. The upcoming workshop will explore several development scenarios for the neighborhood.
Shank Painter Road is being rebuilt to include bicycle lanes and proper sidewalks along its whole length as part of a state-funded transportation improvement program next year. The planning aims to rezone the area to encourage pedestrian-friendly, mixed-used developments that will also make good use of the uniquely large parcels that are found along the roadway.
At the July 10 workshop, consultants explained the benefits of “form-based code,” which can help lock in design standards for new redevelopment projects. Form-based codes can help ensure that even large buildings fit a community’s existing aesthetic, the consultants said. Provincetown’s voters have authorized adding a fourth story to inclusionary housing projects in the corridor.
A “final vision presentation” will be held in late October. The planning project’s timeline calls for new zoning bylaws for Shank Painter Road to go to public hearings in March 2025. —Paul Benson
