Fighting Green Crabs
Just four weeks after the shellfish dept. first began its green crab predator control program, over 6,000 crabs have been caught in Chipman’s Cove, said Shellfish Constable Nancy Civetta.
The program was implemented this summer after shellfisherman Michael Parlante came to the department with the idea, Civetta said. “Any shellfisherman around town is going to tell you that green crabs are voracious predators, especially of seed oysters,” she said. The crabs thus threaten the supply of adult oysters coming out of Wellfleet Harbor.
Deputy Constable Johnny “Clam” Mankevitch has placed eel traps across Chipman’s Cove where many commercial harvesters grow their seed oysters. The program required a permit from the Div. of Marine Fisheries and can continue through Dec. 31. The plan was to move the traps from one harvesting area to another, Civetta said, but the traps have stayed put because they are still filling with crabs. —Sam Pollak
