Early in-Person Voting
The state primary election is Sept. 3, and the last day to register is Saturday, Aug. 24. Voters who want to cast their ballots early may do so in person in the clerk’s office at town hall on Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., then Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Gift of a House
The select board at its Aug. 13 meeting reviewed a 99-year lease offered to the town by the Truro Conservation Trust on a house at 71 North Pamet Road bequeathed to the trust in 2007 by Nancy Fales of Westport, Conn. The land will remain in the possession of the trust, but the house on the property will be used as workforce housing for town employees.
According to the Aug. 13 select board meeting packet, the intended initial tenants are paramedics.
“It’s exciting to see this moving forward,” said board member Stephanie Rein, though neither the packet nor the meeting proceedings indicated when the housing is expected to become available.
Rein asked Town Manager Darrin Tangeman whether the town would be responsible for the real estate taxes during the term of the lease.
“We’re responsible for it, but we don’t tax ourselves,” said Tangeman. The town will pay its rent by making a one-time transfer of $260,000 and then a $1-per-year payment to the trust for the next 98 years, terms which had been authorized at the 2023 town meeting.
Following this clarification, Rein moved to approve the lease and funding, Bob Weinstein seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously. —Aden Choate
